Actress Ariyiike Dimples – Why I stopped going to church

Based on her public statements, particularly in interviews and on her social media, Nigerian actress and media personality Ariyiike Dimples explained that she stopped attending church services for several key reasons.

Her decision stems from a disillusionment with the institutional church, rather than a loss of personal faith. Here are the main reasons she has cited:

1. Hypocrisy and Judgment

This is one of her most significant reasons. She expressed that she found many churchgoers to be hypocritical, judgmental, and insincere.

  • “Fake” Lifestyle: She felt that people put on a “holy” facade on Sundays but lived differently during the week.
  • Gossip and Backbiting: She mentioned being taken aback by the level of gossip and judgment within the church community, which she found contrary to Christian teachings of love and acceptance.

2. Overemphasis on Money and Prosperity

Ariyiike has been critical of what she calls the “commercialization” of the church. She felt that the focus had shifted from spiritual growth to financial gain.

  • Constant Demands for Money: She stated that she grew tired of the relentless requests for tithes, offerings, and “seed sowing,” often with promises of miraculous financial returns.
  • Miracle for Sale: She expressed discomfort with the idea that miracles, blessings, and spiritual breakthroughs were seemingly tied to how much money one could give.

3. Preference for a Personal Relationship with God

A core part of her argument is that she does not need a church building to worship or connect with God.

  • God is Everywhere: She believes in having a direct, personal relationship with God and feels that this can be nurtured anywhere—at home, in nature, etc.—not just within the four walls of a church.
  • Spirituality over Religion: She has leaned towards a more personal form of spirituality, focusing on her own understanding of God’s word and living a good life, rather than adhering to religious rituals she found empty.

4. Lack of Genuine Worship

She felt that many church services had become more of a social event or a performance than a place for true, heartfelt worship and connection with God.

In summary, Ariyiike Dimples’ decision was not an abandonment of her faith in God, but a conscious move away from the church institution. She was seeking a more authentic, less judgmental, and less materialistic spiritual experience, which she believes she can find on her own terms.
