Five feared de@d as b@ndits attack National Park in Oyo

This is a major national park and tourist destination known for its historical significance as the site of the ancient Oyo empire (Oyo-Ile) and its diverse wildlife. The attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of tourists and staff in Nigeria’s national parks.

The term “bandits” in Nigeria typically refers to armed criminal gangs, often operating in rural areas. They are notorious for mass kidnappings, cattle rustling, and violent robbery. While this problem has historically been concentrated in Nigeria’s northwestern and north-central regions, this attack in the southwest is a sign that the violence is spreading to new areas.

Following the attack, the Oyo State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies, including the local Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun), were deployed to the area to pursue the attackers and restore order. An investigation is ongoing.

This incident underscores the severe security challenges facing Nigeria, affecting not only the safety of citizens but also the tourism industry and the preservation of national heritage sites.
