CD Calls On Tinubu To Restrain Wike

This is a political pressure group in Nigeria. Such groups often emerge to comment on national issues, criticize government policies, and advocate for their interpretation of democracy. They are not an official political party but a collection of individuals, often with political or civil society backgrounds, who use a collective name to give their statements more weight.

The current President of Nigeria and leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). As President, he is the ultimate authority and appointed all his ministers, including Wike.

The current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which includes Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. He is a highly influential and controversial figure

He was a two-term Governor of Rivers State and a prominent member of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Despite being a PDP “stakeholder,” Wike worked against his own party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election, helping Tinubu (of the APC) to win. As a reward, Tinubu appointed him to the powerful position of FCT Minister. This created an unusual and often tense political situation.

Wike has launched a massive and aggressive campaign to demolish what he deems “illegal structures” and reclaim government land. While his administration argues this is necessary to restore the Abuja Master Plan, critics accuse him of:

Wike is locked in a bitter power struggle with his successor and former protégé, the current Governor of Rivers State, Sim Fubara.

Critics, including the Concerned Democrats, accuse Wike of using his federal platform and influence as a minister to destabilize the PDP-led government in his home state. They argue he should focus on his FCT duties and not meddle in state politics.

Wike is known for his blunt, aggressive, and often dismissive public statements. He frequently taunts his political opponents and critics, a style many find unbecoming of a federal minister. This “strongman” attitude is seen as undermining the decorum of the federal cabinet.

What “Restrain” Means in This Context

When the Concerned Democrats call on President Tinubu to “restrain” Wike, they are essentially asking the President to:

  1. Rein Him In: Tell Wike to tone down his public rhetoric and act with more decorum expected of a minister.
  2. Focus on His Job: Advise him to concentrate on his responsibilities in the FCT and stop interfering in the political affairs of Rivers State.
  3. Ensure Due Process: Order him to follow the rule of law and be more humane in his urban renewal policies in Abuja.
  4. Uphold the Constitution: Remind him that his loyalty is to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the President who appointed him, not to his personal or state-level political battles.

4. The Political Implications

This call is more than just a press release; it highlights significant political undercurrents:

  • A Test of Tinubu’s Authority: It questions whether President Tinubu is fully in control of his cabinet. If he cannot or will not restrain a powerful and controversial minister like Wike, it can be perceived as a sign of weakness.
  • Internal APC Discontent: Many members of the ruling APC are unhappy with the power and influence wielded by Wike, a man from the opposition PDP. The CD’s call often echoes the sentiments within the APC who feel Wike has been given too much leeway.
  • Public Perception: The controversy shapes public perception of the Tinubu administration, making it appear either decisive (if it acts) or chaotic (if it allows Wike to continue unchecked).
