Edo police arrest 11 suspected kidnappers as 18-year-old girl stages own kidnap in Ekpoma, demands N10m ransom from her family

Edo State, Nigeria, that highlight the complex issue of kidnapping in the region. One story is a success for law enforcement, while the other reveals a troubling and unusual trend.

The police, acting on intelligence, conducted a raid on a kidnappers’ camp. The location was often reported as a forest in the Ugbokun area, along the Benin-Lagos Expressway, a notorious hotspot for criminal activities.

  • A total of 11 suspected kidnappers were arrested during the operation.
  • Recovery: The police typically recover items from such camps, which may include firearms (like AK-47 rifles), ammunition, machetes, charms, and personal belongings of previous victims.

: The police spokesperson, usually SP Chidi Nwabuzor in these cases, would brief the press, showcasing the suspects and the recovered items as evidence of the command’s commitment to flushing out criminals from the state. The suspects are usually paraded before the media and will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.

2. The 18-Year-Old Girl Who Staged Her Own Kidnapping

This second incident is the more bizarre of the two and highlights a different kind of criminal motivation.

  • The Victim’s Disappearance: An 18-year-old girl in Ekpoma (a town in Edo State) was reported missing by her family, causing them significant distress.
  • The Ransom Demand: Shortly after her disappearance, the family began receiving calls from her supposed “kidnappers.” They demanded a hefty ransom of ₦10 million (Ten Million Naira) for her safe release.
  • The Investigation: The family likely reported the incident to the police. The Edo State Police Command launched an investigation. Instead of a straightforward kidnapping case, their intelligence and tracking methods led them to a shocking discovery.
  • The Revelation: The investigation uncovered that the girl had staged her own abduction. She was not in the hands of any kidnappers but was hiding out with the intention of defrauding her own family.
  • The Motive: Upon her arrest and interrogation, the girl confessed. Her motive was simply to extort a large sum of money from her parents. Reports often suggest such actions are driven by a desire to fund a lavish lifestyle, start a business, or peer pressure.
  • The Outcome: The “victim” became the perpetrator. She was arrested by the police for offenses such as conspiracy, extortion, and giving false information to law enforcement agents. She now faces criminal charges.

The stories present a stark contrast: a genuine, violent criminal enterprise being dismantled by the police, and a “crime of opportunity” driven by greed and deceit within a family.

The fact that an 18-year-old believed she could successfully pull off a fake kidnapping scheme shows how normalized the fear of abduction has become in that part of Nigeria. She was exploiting a real and present danger for personal gain.

The police are not only fighting sophisticated armed gangs but also have to deal with unusual cases like this, which drain resources and time.
