Popular Nigerian celebrity barman and socialite, Pascal Okechukwu, widely known as Cubana Chiefpriest, has sparked fresh conversations regarding his political allegiance. The socialite recently addressed the criticism he faces for supporting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) despite the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Speaking in a viral video and subsequent social media posts, Cubana Chiefpriest offered a pragmatic, albeit controversial, explanation for his stance. He argued that remaining in the political opposition would render him powerless to advocate for the release of the IPOB leader, who is currently facing trial.

Cubana Chiefpriest, who hails from the South-East region like Nnamdi Kanu, stated that politics is a game of interest and influence. According to him, criticizing the government from the sidelines achieves little for those incarcerated.”I nor fit help Nnamdi Kanu from opposition,” the socialite declared in Pidgin English. “To help him, I must be where the power is. I must be close to those who have the keys to his cell.”He further explained that aligning with the APC provides him with a seat at the table, implying that friendship with the central government is a strategic necessity for negotiation. He suggested that being an “enemy” of the government would only harden their stance against Kanu, whereas being an ally could allow for behind-the-scenes advocacy.

“Politics is a Game of Interest”The socialite emphasized that he is an Igbo man first and a politician second, but he understands that the region needs to be in sync with the center to attract development and political favors. He noted that the South-East has historically suffered politically due to a lack of alignment with the ruling party at the federal level.”I am a businessman, and I understand how things work,” Cubana Chiefpriest said. “You don’t fight the people in power and expect them to listen to you. You align with them, build a relationship, and then push your agenda. That is the only way the South-East can get what it wants.”

While some praise him for his political realism and understanding of Nigerian dynamics, others, particularly supporters of the IPOB leader, have criticized him for fraternizing with a government they believe is persecuting Kanu.Responding to the backlash, the socialite maintained that his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC is not betrayal, but a strategic move to ensure the region is not marginalized.
