Gunmen k!ll President General of Ogidi community and one other in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the assassination of Chief Ikwuka Okoye (popularly known as Anumili), the President General (PG) of the Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area. The incident occurred on the evening of Friday, February 6, 2026, at the Ogidi School Field.

the IncidentThe Victims: Chief Okoye was shot dead alongside another person, identified by some sources as his relative or a companion. The Suspects: Security reports suggest the attackers were members of a cult group (specifically linked to the Neo-Black Movement or Aye). The Motive: The killing is believed to be a reprisal attack. It follows the recent death of a notorious cult leader and “hit squad” commander known as Emma Amasco. Amasco had reportedly died in the custody of local security operatives after being arrested for various crimes, and his followers allegedly blamed the President General and local vigilantes for his death.

Current Situation in OgidiSecurity Response: The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that police operatives have taken over the scene and are using eyewitness accounts to track the perpetrators.Atmosphere: There is significant tension and mourning in Ogidi—which is notably the hometown of the late legendary author Chinua Achebe. Residents are reportedly staying indoors due to fears of further cult-related violence.Wider Context: This incident highlights a worrying trend in Anambra, where community leaders (Presidents General) have increasingly become targets of armed groups.Note: The police have urged residents to remain calm and provide any useful information that could lead to the arrest of the gunmen.
