Kwankwaso Supporters Propose Obi–Kwankwaso Presidential Ticket
the National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have formally proposed a joint presidential ticket with the Labour Party’s Peter Obi for the 2027 general elections.
As of February 6–7, 2026, this proposal has gained significant traction following a public declaration by Kwankwaso’s loyalists in Kano.
ProposalThe Proponents: The call was led by Abba Sadauki Gwale, a prominent supporter from the same constituency as Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. Speaking on behalf of various support groups, he urged both leaders to set aside personal ambitions for the “rescue” of the nation. The Ticket Structure: While the groups are pushing for an Obi–Kwankwaso (or Kwankwaso–Obi) ticket, they have expressed flexibility, suggesting the duo could run under “any of the political parties” that would accommodate them.Strategic Goal: The supporters believe that merging Obi’s massive southern and youth following (the “Obidients”) with Kwankwaso’s formidable northern grassroots base (the “Kwankwasiyya” movement) is the only way to effectively challenge the ruling APC and President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Political ContextKwankwaso’s Stance: In January 2026, Kwankwaso hinted that he is open to alliances but only on terms that guarantee him a Presidential or Vice-Presidential slot, dismissing any talk of his party (NNPP) being absorbed without significant leverage.Labour Party’s Position: Despite the grassroots push, some Labour Party chieftains have remained cautious, recently stating that there are no “formal” merger talks currently underway, though “high-level talks” between individual leaders continue to be reported.Public Sentiment: The proposal is largely driven by growing public discontent over economic challenges, including inflation and insecurity, which the support groups cited as the primary motivation for seeking a “formidable alternative.”
