Rotimi Amaechi explains why he attended N’Assembly protest with his son

former Minister of Transportation and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi made a rare public appearance at the National Assembly (NASS) in Abuja.

He wasn’t there for a hearing, but rather to join a protest organized by civil society groups and aggrieved Nigerians, accompanied by his first son, Chidi Amaechi.

Why He Attended with His SonAmaechi addressed the press during the demonstration, offering a blunt explanation for his and his son’s presence. His reasoning centered on civic duty and experiential learning:

Sharing the National Burden: Amaechi stated that he wanted his son to experience firsthand the struggles and frustrations of the average Nigerian. He noted that leaders’ children are often shielded from reality, and he wanted Chidi to “feel the heat” of the country’s current state.

A “Commoner’s” Perspective: He emphasized that despite his previous roles in government, he is now “back to being a regular citizen” and feels the impact of the current economic policies just like everyone else

The protest at the National Assembly yesterday was largely focused on:

Economic Hardship: Citizens were protesting the rising cost of living and the recent tax reforms being debated in the Senate.

Electoral Transparency: Like Atiku Abubakar (who met with IBB on the same day), protesters at NASS were demanding a reversal of the Senate’s decision to allow manual transmission of election results, insisting on a purely electronic system

Political SignificanceAmaechi has been relatively quiet since the 2023 APC primaries. His appearance at a protest—traditionally a space for the opposition—is seen by many as a clear signal of his disassociation from the current administration. By bringing his son, he appeared to be framing his new political identity around “legacy” and “truth-telling” rather than quiet retirement.
