INEC Fully Prepared For February 21 FCT Area Council Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed its full readiness for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections scheduled for this Saturday, February 21, 2026.

This election is seen as a critical “litmus test” for the 2027 General Elections, as it is the only local government election in Nigeria directly conducted by INEC.

INEC has completed nearly all stages of its pre-election roadmap:

  • Mock Accreditation: A successful mock exercise using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) was held on February 7, 2026, to ensure technical stability.
  • Material Distribution: Non-sensitive materials have already been batched at the Area Council levels. Sensitive materials are expected to be moved to registration centers by Friday.
  • Ad-hoc Staff: Recruitment and training for Presiding Officers and Assistant Presiding Officers have been concluded.
  • Observation: The commission has accredited 83 domestic and 5 foreign observer groups to monitor the transparency of the polls.

Important Reminders for Voters

  • Campaign Deadline: All public campaigning must end by midnight on Thursday, February 19, 2026.
  • Voting Policy: The “No PVC, No Voting” rule remains strictly in effect.
  • Accreditation: Voting starts at 8:30 AM at the polling unit where you are registered.

Note: This election is particularly significant because it marks exactly one year before the 2027 national polls. Political analysts are watching closely to see how the “Big Three” parties (APC, PDP, and LP) perform in the nation’s capital.
