Rivers Assembly Suspends Impeachment Proceedings Against Governor Fubara, Deputy Odu

the House of Assembly officially suspended impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu on Thursday

This decision marks a temporary “ceasefire” in the high-stakes power struggle involving the Governor, the House of Assembly, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The resolution was reached during a plenary session in Port Harcourt, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule. Several factors contributed to this sudden halt

Presidential Intervention: Speaker Amaewhule confirmed that the withdrawal was a direct result of a fresh peace deal brokered by President Bola Tinubu

Withdrawal of Legal Battles: As part of the agreement, both the executive and legislative arms have reportedly withdrawn all pending lawsuits against each other in the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

Constitutional Expectations: While halting the process, the lawmakers emphasized that they expect the Governor and his Deputy to strictly adhere to constitutional provisions, particularly regarding the state budget and legislative autonomy.

Extra-budgetary spending without legislative approval.

Why was the Impeachment Initiated?โ€‹The House had originally served impeachment notices in January 2026, citing several allegations of “gross misconduct,” including:

The demolition of the Assembly complex in 2023.

Failure to comply with court rulings regarding the financial autonomy of the legislature.

Withholding funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission.

Current Political Atmosphereโ€‹This is the third time the Assembly has stepped back from the brink of impeaching Fubara. While this development offers a much-needed reprieve, the political climate remains fragile. The state is also preparing for a House of Assembly bye-election scheduled for February 21, 2026, which has already stirred controversy over the exclusion of certain opposition parties.
