Kwankwaso Supporters Warn Kano Assembly Against Impeaching Deputy Governor Gwarzo
Supporters of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, primarily under the Kwankwasiyya Movement, have issued a stern warning to the Kano State House of Assembly following the initiation of impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
The situation, which has rapidly escalated since March 5, 2026, centers on a deep political rift within the state’s leadership.
- Refusal to Defect: The crisis follows Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in January 2026. Deputy Governor Gwarzo, a staunch Kwankwaso loyalist, refused to join him, choosing to remain in the NNPP.
- Corruption Allegations: The Assembly has served an impeachment notice signed by 38 of 40 members, alleging gross misconduct and financial impropriety. Specifically, they claim Gwarzo diverted local government funds totaling over ₦1.6 billion during his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government (2023–2024).
- Kwankwasiyya’s Stance: The movement describes the move as “politically motivated” and “legislative rascality.” They argue that the impeachment is a vendetta designed to punish Gwarzo for his loyalty to Kwankwaso and to facilitate a total APC takeover of the state’s mandate.
The Warning from Supporters
In a statement issued by spokesperson Dr. Habibu Mohammad, the Kwankwasiyya Movement warned that:
- Political Instability: Forcing Gwarzo out could provoke “unnecessary political tension” and deepen divisions in a state already on edge.
- Betrayal of Voters: They reminded the state government that the 2023 victory was a collective effort of Kwankwasiyya faithful, not any single individual, and cautioned against “abandoning the alliances” that built the current administration.
- Future Consequences: The NNPP national leadership added that “2027 is closer than it appears,” suggesting that legislators supporting the impeachment will face the “wrath of the masses” at the next polls.
The Deputy Governor has been given a two-week ultimatum (ending mid-March 2026) to respond to the allegations. If he fails to satisfy the Assembly, the House is expected to request the State Chief Judge to constitute an investigative panel, the next formal step toward removal.
