Several Passengers Injured In Abuja-Kaduna Train Accident

Travelers on the popular Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor faced a terrifying morning today, Monday after a serious operational failure left several passengers injured and many others stranded.

The Incident: What Went Wrong?

According to official reports from the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), the accident happened near Asham Station (in the Jere-Asham section).

The train had stopped at Jere Station to attach a rear locomotive for additional support. However, shortly after departing, the rear locomotive unexpectedly became detached while the train was moving on a downward gradient. The detached locomotive rolled forward and rammed into the back of the passenger coaches.

Passengers on Board: 429 passengers, 46 crew members, and 24 security personnel.

Impact: Passengers reported a “loud bang” followed by a violent jolt that flung people from their seats.

Casualties: Fortunately, no lives were lost, but several passengers sustained varying degrees of injury, including cuts, bruises, and bleeding.

Emergency Response & Stranded Travelers

Immediately following the collision, the train came to a sudden halt, leaving hundreds of passengers in a state of panic for about 30 to 40 minutes.

Onboard medical responders and NRC personnel provided initial first aid before the train was eventually cleared to proceed slowly to Idu Station in Abuja. Upon arrival at Idu, more comprehensive medical assistance was provided to those with severe injuries.

Official Investigation Launched

The Director-General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., confirmed that a full investigation is now underway to examine technical, operational, and infrastructure factors. This incident comes at a time when the Senate has been probing the rising frequency of derailments and technical failures within the Nigerian rail system.

“We heard a loud bang and the train jolted to a stop, flinging people across. Passengers got hit and most are bleeding…” — Sada Malumfashi, a passenger on board.

What This Means for Commuters

While the train eventually reached its destination, the incident has sparked fresh concerns about the safety and maintenance of the Abuja-Kaduna line. Travelers are advised to expect slight delays as technical teams conduct safety audits on the affected coaches.
