AFCON final result overturned as CAF strips Senegal of title, awards Morocco 3-0 victory

SHOCKER: CAF Strips Senegal of AFCON Title, Crowns Morocco Champions via 3-0 Forfeit

In a decision that has sent shockwaves through the footballing world, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially overturned the result of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

Despite Senegal winning the match 1-0 on the pitch back in January, the CAF Appeal Board ruled on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, that the Atlas Lions of Morocco are the official champions, awarding them a retrospective 3-0 victory.

The Drama That Started It All

The roots of this unprecedented ruling trace back to the chaotic final moments of regulation time in Rabat. With the game deadlocked at 0-0 in stoppage time:

  1. The Disallowed Goal: Senegal had a goal ruled out for a controversial foul.
  2. The Penalty: Moments later, Morocco was awarded a penalty after a VAR review.
  3. The Walkout: Furious with the officiating, the Senegalese players, reportedly under instruction from head coach Pape Thiaw, walked off the pitch in protest.

The match was delayed for nearly 20 minutes before Senegal captain Sadio Mané eventually persuaded his teammates to return. While Morocco’s Brahim Díaz subsequently missed the penalty and Senegal went on to score the winner in extra time, the damage was already done in the eyes of the rulebook.

The Legal Hammer: Articles 82 & 84

Morocco’s Football Federation (FRMF) appealed the initial disciplinary ruling, arguing that the walkout was a fundamental breach of tournament integrity. The CAF Appeal Board agreed, citing two specific regulations:

  • Article 82: States that any team refusing to play or leaving the ground before the regular end of a match without referee authorization is considered the loser.
  • Article 84: Dictates that such a team must lose the match by a 3-0 scoreline (unless the opponent had already achieved a more advantageous result).

“The Senegal National Team is declared to have forfeited the Final Match… with the result of the Match being recorded as 3–0 in favour of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF).” — Official CAF Statement

The reaction in Dakar has been one of pure outrage. Senegalese defender Moussa Niakhaté took to Instagram with a defiant message: “Come and get [the trophy]! They’re crazy!” The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has already labeled the ruling a “travesty” and confirmed they will be taking the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland.

For now, however, Morocco holds its first AFCON title since 1976—not via a trophy lift in the stadium, but through a landmark legal victory in the boardroom.
