“We Are Not Happy!” — Wike Fires Back at Super Eagles, Drops Hard Truth to Joseph Yobo

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has openly voiced the frustration of millions of Nigerians regarding the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking live in Abuja during the official commissioning of the Kuje-Gwagwalada Dual Carriageway, Wike spotted former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo in the crowd and chose not to mince words.

“I Won’t Clap For You”

While the crowd was cheering and clapping at the mention of the national team, Wike stood his ground, stating that the team’s performance didn’t deserve a round of applause.

Addressing Yobo directly, the FCT Minister said:

“Yes, we have congratulated one of our stars, Joseph Yobo. But let me use this medium through you to tell the Super Eagles: we are not happy.“

“So if nobody tells you that, because there are some people clapping for you… the moment they say Super Eagles, I say I won’t clap. I won’t clap because I watch the World Cup, I see countries I’ve never heard of before qualifying to play in the World Cup, and I’m sitting down hours watching countries that I’ve not known.”

Star Players Worldwide, But Absent on the Big Stage

Wike expressed deep frustration that despite Nigeria boasting immense talent across Europe and major global football leagues, the country still managed to miss out on the historic, newly expanded 48-team tournament.

“In this context, not less than 13 Nigerians are playing all over the world,” Wike added, pointing out how painful it is to watch other African nations step up while Nigeria stays on the sidelines. “Yobo, go and tell them we are not happy.”

Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 World Cup follows a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat against the Democratic Republic of Congo during the African qualifying playoffs, marking the second consecutive time the football-loving nation has missed the global showpiece.
