Police Apprehend, Detain Four Officers Over Extortion Of ICPC Chairman In Abuja

FCT Police Arrest 4 Rogue Officers for Extorting N53,000 from ICPC Chairman in Abuja

In a plot twist that sounds straight out of a Nollywood movie, four officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have landed in hot water after allegedly extorting the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN).

The drama unfolded in the Banex area of Wuse, Abuja, when the officers left their assigned duty posts to set up an illegal stop-and-search checkpoint.

“You cannot be a policeman and a thief at the same time. You must choose one.”

โ€” Ahmed Sanusi, Commissioner of Police, FCT Command

How It Happened: The POS Extortion

According to FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, the four rogue officers formed an unauthorized syndicate to trap unsuspecting road users.

Unaware of who he was, the officers stopped the ICPC boss and demanded money. Dr. Aliyu calmly complied, ordered someone to transfer funds to him, and walked with them to a nearby Point of Sale (POS) agent.

  • The Amount: โ‚ฆ53,000
  • The Extra Charge: The ICPC Chairman was made to pay the POS transaction fees himself!
  • The Aftermath: The officers shared the money among themselves and fled the scene.

The Arrest & FCT Police Response

After the incident was reported, the FCT Police Command launched a manhunt and declared the rogue officers wanted. Detectives tracked down the gang leader, whose confession led directly to the arrest of the remaining three officers.

CP Ahmed Sanusi made it clear that the officers would face full disciplinary action and potential dismissal from the force:

“We got all of them. We are going to make sure they are severely punished. Those that are going to be dismissed will definitely be dismissed.”

Important Reminder for the Public

While addressing journalists at the Command Headquarters, CP Sanusi reiterated strict directives from the Inspector-General of Police regarding citizen rights on the road:

  1. Phone Searches are Banned: Police officers on routine patrol have NO right to search your mobile phone.
  2. When Phone Searches Are Allowed: A search can only be conducted if a suspect has been formally arrested and brought to a police station under proper investigation.
  3. Do Not Comply Unlawfully: If an officer demands to go through your phone at a checkpoint, refuse and immediately report them to police emergency lines.
  4. Report Misconduct: Public cooperation is key to weeding out criminal elements within the police force.
