NDLEA Raises Alarm Over Illicit Drugs Disguised As Cookies, Gummies

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a stern warning to parents, guardians, and young Nigerians over the dangerous proliferation of illicit drugs disguised as everyday snacks, including cookies, gummies, candies, and brownies.

The anti-narcotics agency revealed that drug syndicates and illicit bakeries are increasingly targeting unsuspecting youths, students, and partygoers by infusing high-potency cannabis derivatives, synthetic narcotics, and hallucinogens into attractive, regular-looking confectioneries.

“A Silent Threat in Plain Sight” — NDLEA Alerts the Public

According to security officials, these drug-infused treats are frequently distributed through covert social media vendors, private house parties, university campuses, and online delivery networks.

“Criminal networks are constantly changing tactics to bypass detection and target young people. Packaging dangerous narcotics into everyday sweets and baked goods is a deliberate attempt to lower suspicion, evade law enforcement, and trick young minds into addiction.” — NDLEA Public Advocacy Division

The agency warned that consuming these laced edibles carries severe health risks—including acute anxiety, psychological breaks, sudden respiratory distress, and accidental overdose—primarily because consumers have no way of knowing the actual potency or chemical cocktail hidden inside each bite.

Red Flags & What To Watch Out For

To help families and young adults stay protected, the NDLEA highlighted key warning signs associated with illicit drug-laced edibles:

  • Unregistered & Unlabeled Packaging: Sweets or baked goods lacking official NAFDAC registration numbers, manufacturer addresses, or nutritional labels.
  • Suspicious Online Vendors: Social media pages or delivery channels selling high-priced “special” or “exotic” brownies, gummies, and chocolates under vague descriptions.
  • Unbranded Party Snacks: Free or sold home-baked treats at clubs, lounge events, and student parties that produce unusually strong physical or mental reactions.
  • Unusual Physical Symptoms: Sudden disorientation, extreme lethargy, paranoia, or slurred speech shortly after consuming packaged snacks.

Protecting the Next Generation

The NDLEA called on parents, school administrators, and community custodians to stay vigilant regarding what children and teenagers buy online or bring into their homes. The agency reaffirmed that operations targeting illicit bakeries, online distribution hubs, and trafficking rings are being intensified nationwide to curb the spread of these dangerous substances.
