They should ban DNA tests; it’s destroying marriages” — Nigerian woman insists

A controversial debate has taken over Nigerian social media after a woman publicly called for a total ban on Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) paternity tests across the country, claiming the procedure is doing more harm than good to families.

In a video that has since gone viral across TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram, the unidentified woman strongly argued that routine paternity testing is undermining trust, ruining long-standing unions, and leaving countless children emotionally traumatized.

“It Is Bringing More Harm Than Good”

Expressing her frustration over the rising rate of marriage breakdowns attributed to DNA results, she urged authorities and societal leaders to intervene.

“DNA testing should be banned in Nigeria. It is destroying homes and scattering marriages that have lasted for years. Before now, families lived in peace. Now, because of one test, children are losing their fathers and homes are broken overnight,” she stated in the viral clip.

She further claimed that the psychological damage inflicted on innocent children—who suddenly find out the man they called “father” all their lives is not biologically related to them—outweighs the desire for truth.

Social Media Reacts: Outrage vs. Support

The statement immediately sparked heated arguments across various online platforms, dividing netizens into opposing camps.

  • The Critics: A vast majority of commentators, particularly men, strongly rejected her stance. Many argued that paternity fraud is a serious ethical issue and that every man has a fundamental right to know if he is the biological father of his child. They emphasized that infidelity, not the test itself, is what truly destroys the marriage.
  • The Supporters: On the other hand, some backed her perspective from a family preservation standpoint. They argued that once a man has accepted and raised a child, biological ties should not automatically dissolve the legal, emotional, and social duties of fatherhood, especially when it jeopardizes the child’s stability and welfare.

The Growing DNA Debate in Nigeria

In recent years, paternity disputes have become a dominant topic in public discourse across Nigeria. With DNA testing laboratories becoming more accessible and affordable, more men are opting for paternity verification—sometimes prompted by custody disputes, inheritance matters, or marital suspicion.

While legal and medical experts maintain that DNA testing remains a critical tool for medical clarity, legal rights, and truth, social commentators continue to clash over its broader impact on traditional family structures.
