Goods Worth Millions Destroyed as Fire Guts Building in Computer Village

IKEJA, LAGOS — Panic and despair engulfed the popular Computer Village in Ikeja on Tuesday morning as a raging fire tore through a multi-story commercial plaza, destroying goods worth hundreds of millions of Naira and leaving dozens of traders in financial ruin.

The fire, which is suspected to have started from an electrical fault in the early hours of the morning, quickly spread through the building, which houses numerous shops selling phones, laptops, computer accessories, and other electronic gadgets. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky, visible from several kilometers away, as traders and bystanders watched helplessly.

By the time firefighters from the Lagos State Fire Service arrived at the scene, the fire had already engulfed a significant portion of the four-story building. Emergency responders battled the blaze for several hours, facing challenges including water scarcity and the congested nature of the market, which hindered easy access for fire trucks.

“I received a call around 4:00 a.m.,” said a distraught shop owner, Chidi Okafor, who sold laptops and phone accessories. “By the time I got here, everything was gone. My entire stock, my savings, my shop—everything I have worked for for the past 12 years has turned to ash. I don’t know where to start from.”

The affected plaza, known locally as “Karaole,” was one of the busier sections of the market. Traders estimated that the combined value of the goods lost in the fire could be well over ₦500 million (approximately $330,000 USD). Many of the affected business owners do not have insurance, raising fears of a permanent shutdown for many of them.

Officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) were present to coordinate the response and manage the crowd. The Chairman of the Computer Village Traders Association, Mr. Adesegun Ogunlana, visited the scene and expressed his devastation.

“This is a colossal loss not just for the affected traders but for the entire Computer Village ecosystem,” Ogunlana said. “We are calling on the state government to support our members. We will also be launching an internal investigation to understand how this happened and how we can prevent a recurrence. Our priority now is to help the victims get back on their feet.”

While no casualties have been officially reported at this time, the incident has once again raised serious concerns about fire safety protocols in one of West Africa’s largest technology markets. Issues such as faulty wiring, improper storage of fuel for generators, and blocked access routes for emergency vehicles have long been a problem in the densely populated market.

As the fire was finally brought under control in the late morning, the scene was one of smoldering rubble and destroyed merchandise. LASEMA officials have cordoned off the area to prevent looting and to allow for a thorough investigation into the exact cause of the fire. The road to recovery for the affected traders is expected to be long and arduous.
