Nigerian student jailed for using fake ID to work in UK hospitals without medical training
In a case that has recently drawn significant attention, Oluwabunmi Adeleiyi, a 30-year-old Nigerian student, was sentenced in February 2026 for defrauding the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). Adeleiyi, who was living in Cardiff on a student visa, used a stolen identity to work as a healthcare support worker despite having no medical training.
Adeleiyi’s deception was not a solitary act but part of a coordinated effort. According to evidence presented at Cardiff Crown Court:Identity Theft: She used the credentials of a legitimate healthcare worker who had reportedly fled the UK for Nigeria. The Payout: Adeleiyi and two accomplices used the same set of identification documents to bill the NHS for approximately £16,000 per month through various employment agencies. The Locations: She successfully gained employment at Neath Port Talbot Hospital and the Caswell Clinic, a medium-secure mental health unit in Bridgend.
The scheme collapsed during a night shift at the Caswell Clinic. A vigilant receptionist noticed something physically wrong with Adeleiyi’s ID card—a passport photograph had been crudely placed over the original card inside a plastic wallet. When confronted, Adeleiyi refused to hand over her documentation and fled the scene. This triggered a “critical incident” declaration by the Swansea Bay University Health Board.
Safety Risks and “Bizarre” BehaviorThe internal investigation revealed several alarming safety breaches during her time at the hospitals:Lack of Training: She had zero training in medical procedures or patient restraint techniques, yet she was making entries into official patient observation notes.Erratic Conduct: Staff reported “bizarre” behavior, including Adeleiyi locking herself alone in ward rooms.Danger to Patients: She was found to have locked corridor doors that were required to remain open for fire safety and for staff to respond to emergencies involving violent patients.
