Kidnappers abduct Police officer, 4 others in Edo

The incidents occurred in two separate operations within the Edo North Senatorial District, highlighting a recent spike in insecurity in the region.

The Health Centre Attack: Gunmen stormed the Makeke Community Health Centre and kidnapped three people:

โ€‹Tope Oriloye: A female secondary school student.โ€‹Samuel Ilesanmi: A man who had brought his sick child to the facility.โ€‹Gladys Okomayin: A nurse at the centre (who was later abandoned by the kidnappers in the bush as she could not keep up with their pace).

The Residential Attack: In a separate but nearby operation in Auchi, kidnappers invaded the home of Police Inspector Segun Obanowa. They initially abducted him along with his wife and daughter.

The kidnappers later released his wife, reportedly sending her to source the ransom for her husband and daughter’s release

Ransom Demands and Police Responseโ€‹The kidnappers have since established contact with the victims’ families.โ€‹Ransom: A demand of โ‚ฆ100 million has been made for the release of Tope Oriloye and Samuel Ilesanmi.โ€‹Police Action: The Edo State Police Commandโ€™s spokesperson, CSP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incidents. While some suspects have already been taken into custody, tactical teams and local vigilantes are currently combing the forests in the Akoko-Edo area to rescue the remaining victims.

This wave of kidnappings has sparked significant concern among local community leaders, who have called on the state government to reinforce security in the “wilderness” areas bordering Kogi and Kwara states.
