Atiku asks INEC to reschedule 2027 elections over Ramadan clash

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to revise the recently announced 2027 general election timetable, citing a direct clash with the Ramadan fast.

Atiku’s concern stems from the overlap between the election schedule and the Islamic holy month, which is a period of fasting and intense spiritual devotion for millions of Nigerians.

โ€‹INEC’s Proposed Dates: Presidential and National Assembly elections are set for February 20, 2027, followed by Governorship and State Assembly polls on March 6, 2027.

โ€‹Ramadan 2027: Expected to begin around February 7 or 8 and end on March 8 or 9, 2027.

Atikuโ€™s Argumentsโ€‹In a statement released on Friday, February 13, 2026, Atiku criticized the timing as a lack of “foresight” and “sensitivity” to Nigeriaโ€™s religious diversity. His main points include:

Voter Participation: He argued that fasting involves physical endurance and that holding elections during this time could significantly reduce voter turnout and engagement.

Logistics and Focus: The former VP noted that elections require “maximum participation and collective focus,” which may be hindered during a major religious observance

Inclusivity: He stated that in a diverse nation like Nigeria, choosing an acceptable date should be a basic demonstration of competence and respect for citizens.

As of February 15, 2026, INEC has acknowledged the concerns but maintains that the dates were chosen in accordance with constitutional requirements regarding the handover date (May 29). However, pressure is mounting from various civil society groups and political stakeholders to see if a middle ground can be reached
