Singer Kcee declares I am a Biafran
The declaration by Nigerian singer Kcee (Kingsley Okonkwo) that he is a Biafran has generated significant conversation and debate across Nigeria and beyond.
Kcee made the statement during an appearance on the popular Nigerian podcast, The Honest Bunch. The conversation was flowing when the topic of identity and origin came up.
He immediately clarified that for him, the term is about his ethnic and cultural identity, not necessarily a political call for the breakup of Nigeria. He said, “It’s not about fighting or war. It’s about my root.”
He explained that he sees no contradiction in identifying as both Biafran and Nigerian, similar to how someone might identify as Yoruba or Hausa and still be Nigerian.
He challenged the stigma attached to the word, asking why people are scared to identify with it. He emphasized that his father is from Anambra State, which is in the Southeast, and that is his heritage.
Kcee’s declaration, “I am a Biafran,” is far more than a simple personal statement. It is a cultural flashpoint that highlights the unresolved tensions surrounding identity, history, and national unity in Nigeria. By framing it as a matter of personal heritage, he successfully re-ignited a national conversation about what it means to be from the Southeast and, more broadly, what it means to be Nigerian.
