President Bola Tinubu approved a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s sports financing. This “reset” is designed to end the long-standing issues of delayed allowances, poor infrastructure, and bureaucratic bottlenecks that have historically plagued Nigerian athletes.

The reforms are anchored on the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE), which reclassifies sports from a mere social service to a strategic economic driver

​Unified Funding Framework: Tinubu ordered the streamlining of all sports-related allocations previously scattered across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). These funds will now be consolidated under a single framework managed by the National Sports Commission (NSC).

​Immediate Budget Release: A new mandate requires the Ministry of Finance and the Budget Office to release all appropriated sports funds immediately after the national budget is signed into law. This aims to eliminate the “late release” cycle that often hampers preparation for international tournaments.

​Mandatory Provisions: From the 2026 fiscal year, the budget must include specific, adequate provisions for:​Infrastructure development and maintenance.​Scientific elite athlete development.​Grassroots programs and revitalizing sports federations.

Strengthening the NSC​The President officially backed the framework led by Malam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission. By re-empowering the NSC (which had been previously scrapped and replaced by the Ministry of Sports), the administration aims to:​Reduce Bureaucracy: Cut through the red tape of the civil service.​Attract Investment: Position sports as a viable sector for private equity and tourism.​Ensure Certainty: As the President stated, “Nigerian athletes deserve certainty, not excuses.”

The push for this reform followed a successful yet financially turbulent 2025 for Nigerian sports. While the country won 373 medals globally—including a bronze at AFCON 2025—the year was marred by high-profile protests over unpaid allowances, most notably by the Super Eagles and various female national teams.
