“Blame Yourselves” — Rotimi Amaechi Distances Himself from Tinubu’s Administration, Faults Voters

The rhetoric surrounding former Rivers State Governor and Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, represents a significant and public rupture within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Amaechi has positioned himself as an outspoken internal critic of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, frequently shifting the focus of accountability onto state leaders and the voters themselves.

Amaechi’s public declarations highlight three main areas of frustration regarding the current political and economic climate in Nigeria:

1. Faulting the Voters and the Elite

Amaechi has frequently stated that ordinary citizens and the elite bear a portion of responsibility for their current economic hardships. He points to the choices made during the 2023 elections, even revealing during an event marking his 60th birthday that he had personally informed Tinubu prior to the elections that he would not support or vote for him due to fundamental doubts about his governance capacity and policy directions.

2. Calling Out Sitting Governors

Amaechi has sharply criticized contemporary state governors for their silence and perceived complicity in what he defines as “bad governance.” Drawing a contrast with his tenure as Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), he noted:

“In our time, we would have confronted the president. We would have challenged bad policies. Today’s governors say nothing, do nothing. That’s not leadership.”

3. Vowing Opposition and Electoral Resistance

Rather than quietly withdrawing, Amaechi has actively aligned himself with attempts to reshape the political landscape. He has publicly advocated for opposition coalitions to organize against the administration, explicitly warning his supporters that they must actively challenge economic hardship and resist the electoral malpractice that has historically plagued regions like Rivers State.

Following that primary loss, and amplified by the fierce political realignment in Rivers State—where Amaechi’s long-time local rival, Nyesom Wike, aligned with the Tinubu presidency—Amaechi completely distanced himself from the administrative trajectory of the current government. His “blame yourself” rhetoric serves as his definitive break from the administration’s political legacy.
