Amaechi Rejects ADC Presidential Primary Results, Alleges Widespread Disenfranchisement
Former Minister of Transportation and former Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has strongly rejected the results of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election, labeling the outcomes as “concocted.”
The primaries, which took place on Monday, May 25, 2026, ahead of the 2027 presidential election, featured Amaechi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen as the top contenders.
- Mass Disenfranchisement: Amaechi alleged that approximately 80% of registered party members across Nigeria were systematically blocked or prevented from casting their votes.
- Hypocrisy in Leadership: He accused the ADC leadership of practicing the exact electoral malpractices—such as vote-buying, voter suppression, and result manipulation—that the party had historically condemned in the ruling All Commons Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
- Breach of Transparency: Amaechi emphasized that he had explicitly stated prior to the election that he would only accept the results if the process was completely free, fair, and transparent.
“I unequivocally reject the concocted results being announced… There’s no way that about eighty percent of members of the party were not allowed to vote, and you expect me to accept such results.”
Broader Fallout within the ADC
Amaechi’s pushback comes amid growing internal friction within the party during this primary window:
- Hayatu-Deen Pulls Out: Hours before Amaechi’s public rejection, fellow aspirant Mohammed Hayatu-Deen withdrew from the official results announcement process, also citing major irregularities.
- Early Margins: While the ADC leadership has yet to finalize the formal collation across all 36 states and the FCT, early figures show Atiku Abubakar holding a significant lead, with Amaechi in second place.
