Cholera k!lls 40 in Borno
A severe public health crisis is currently unfolding in the northeastern part of Nigeria. Reports reaching Naijatuneshub confirm that a devastating cholera outbreak has claimed the lives of over 40 people in Borno State, leaving more than 3,000 others hospitalized and fighting for their lives.
The outbreak, which rapidly escalated within a single month, has thrown several communities into mourning and left local health centers completely overwhelmed.
The Hardest Hit Areas
According to official government data and reports from local health agencies, the waterborne disease has spread across 139 communities spanning seven Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Borno
The hardest-hit areas include:
- Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC): Over 2,000 recorded infections.
- Jere LGA: Over 1,000 recorded infections.
- Other affected LGAs: Mafa, Konduga, Monguno, Ngala, and Magumeri.
The Executive Secretary of the Borno State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency, Saleh Abba-Kaza, revealed that medical teams are battling a massive influx of patients, sometimes recording over 100 new infections within a 24-hour window.
Government Response and the Fight to Contain It
Speaking on the tragedy, Dauda Iliya, the spokesperson for Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, assured the public that the state government has moved into emergency mode to halt the spread.
“The state government has supplied drugs and medical consumables to treatment facilities to ensure patients receive treatment free of charge,” Iliya stated.
In addition to medical supplies, emergency teams have begun distributing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) materials—such as chlorine tablets and disinfectants—to stop the contamination of local water sources.
Critical Safety Tips for Everyone
Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with the Vibrio cholerae bacterium. With the rainy season creating prime conditions for the disease to spread, here are vital health measures to keep you and your family safe:
- Boil or Treat Your Water: Ensure your drinking water is boiled or treated with chlorine before consumption.
- Wash Hands Frequently: Use soap and clean running water, especially before eating or preparing food, and after using the toilet.
- Cook Food Thoroughly: Avoid raw or half-cooked food. Keep all food items properly covered to prevent flies from landing on them.
- Avoid Open Defecation: Ensure human waste is disposed of properly to avoid contaminating nearby water tables or wells.
- Seek Immediate Help: If you or anyone around you starts experiencing sudden, watery diarrhea and vomiting, head to the nearest healthcare center immediately. Severe dehydration can kill within hours if left untreated.
