Oyo teachers begin indefinite strike over continued captivity of abducted colleagues, pupils

The situation in Oyo State has taken a critical turn as public primary and secondary school teachers officially kicked off an indefinite strike on Monday, June 1, 2026.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) ordered the total withdrawal of classroom services in direct protest against the prolonged captivity of their colleagues and pupils who were kidnapped over two weeks ago.

Here is a breakdown of what led to this shutdown and how the government is responding:

What Triggered the Strike?

  • The May 15 Attack: Armed bandits stormed three schools in the Oriire Local Government Area (specifically Community Grammar School and L.A. Primary School in Ahoro-Esiele, and Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota), abducting dozens of students and staff.
  • Growing Trauma and Tragic Loss: The NUT noted that the continued captivity of these children and educators has created intense fear and anxiety across school communities. To make matters worse, Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed that an assistant headmaster, Mr. Adesiyan, was tragically killed by the captors.
  • WASSCE Disruption: Because teachers are staying home, the strike has immediately disrupted academic calendars and cast a major shadow of uncertainty over the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Government and Security Response

The federal and state governments are trying to de-escalate the tension with a mix of security deployments and community engagements:

  • 1,000 Forest Guards: On Sunday, President Bola Tinubu approved the immediate recruitment and deployment of 1,000 forest guards to heavily secure the area around the Old Oyo National Park and hunt down the kidnappers.
  • High-Level Visits: A federal delegation led by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, along with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and the Inspector-General of Police, visited Ogbomoso to meet with the victims’ grieving families, promising an “intelligence-led, carefully coordinated” rescue mission.
  • Legislative Action: On June 2, the House of Representatives formally urged security agencies to bring the victims home alive and called for the urgent establishment of a permanent military Forward Operating Base in the Oriire axis.

A Nationwide Ripple Effect

This is no longer just an Oyo State crisis. The national leadership of the NUT ordered nationwide solidarity rallies. State chapters across Nigeria—including states like Akwa Ibom and Kano—completely shut down their public schools to hold massive peaceful protests marching to their respective Government Houses, demanding better security infrastructure for schools across the country
