UK breaks with Trump as it refuses to invite Putin to G20

The United Kingdom has officially signaled a sharp diplomatic split from the United States after confirming that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be welcome at the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit hosted by Britain.

The decision stands in stark contrast to the stance of US President Donald Trump, whose administration announced plans to invite Putin to the G20 meeting in Miami, Florida.

“No”: British Prime Minister Firm on Excluded Guest List

In an interview with The Economist, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham delivered a direct response when asked whether Putin would receive an invitation to the summit in Manchester:

“No,” Burnham stated plainly, citing active, wide-ranging international sanctions against top Russian officials following the invasion of Ukraine. “There are sanctions against leading figures in the administration… [He] will not be coming because of an outstanding sanction.”

While Russia retains its formal membership in the G20, UK officials emphasized that direct bilateral engagement with top Russian leadership remains strictly suspended under British foreign policy.

A Growing Transatlantic Rift

The contrasting moves underscore a deepening divide between Washington and London on handling diplomatic relations with Moscow:

• The US Approach: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the decision to invite Putin to the Miami G20 gathering, arguing it creates an opportunity for direct dialogue with President Donald Trump and other international leaders.
• The UK Approach: British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband reaffirmed London’s commitment to isolating the Kremlin, maintaining that the UK will not resume high-level direct contact with Russian leadership as part of its ongoing support for Ukraine.

The UK’s firm stance has drawn support from several European allies who voiced concern over Washington’s attempts to bring Putin back into major international forums.
