Trump bars future presidents from altering Oval Office
Donald Trump Signs Executive Order Barring Future Presidents From Altering Oval Office
United States President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order declaring the Oval Office a national monument. Trump stated that the move is designed to stop future US presidents from modifying or undoing the extensive redesigns made to the iconic workspace.
Speaking to journalists at the White House, Trump emphasized the historical importance of the space.
“We’re making it a national monument, and it will not be allowed to be touched by anybody, destroyed, ripped down by stupid people, in order to build something in a slightly different shape,” Trump declared. “We like the Oval Office, and it’s a symbol, like the White House itself.”
Major Changes to the Oval Office
Since returning to office for his second term, Trump—a former real estate developer—has made notable aesthetic modifications to the Oval Office and Cabinet Room, incorporating distinct gold features, gold-framed portraits, and new decorative elements.
Under standard US law, incoming presidents typically have broad authority to redecorate and alter the Oval Office to suit their preferences, while larger structural changes require congressional review. By attempting to grant the room standalone national monument status, Trump aims to add federal protection to his current layout and design.
However, legal experts and political analysts have questioned whether an executive order can permanently prevent future administrations from redecorating or issuing counter-executive orders of their own.
