Gospel Legend Ron Kenoly Dies At 81
81Ron Kenoly, the dynamic worship leader and recording artist whose high-energy praise anthems helped define the contemporary sound of modern gospel music in the 1990s, has passed away at the age of 81.Kenoly, often dubbed the “Prince of Praise” and the “High Priest of Praise & Worship,” died on Wednesday, December 4, surrounded by his family in Florida. The news of his passing was confirmed by his son, Samuel Kenoly, in a statement released to the public.”Dr. Ron Kenoly, our father, has transitioned to be with the Lord,” the statement read. “He passed away peacefully. We appreciate your prayers and ask for privacy during this difficult time.”
A Voice that Moved the WorldRon Kenoly’s journey to gospel stardom was anything but conventional. Born in Coffeyville, Kansas, and raised in Tuskegee, Alabama, Kenoly spent his early adulthood serving in the United States Air Force, including a tour of duty in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. Following his military career, he pursued a path in secular music, even appearing on variety shows like The Mike Douglas Show. However, in the late 1970s, Kenoly experienced a profound religious conversion that shifted the trajectory of his life and career. He attended Bible college and eventually became the music minister at the famous Jubilee Christian Center in San Jose, California, under the leadership of Pastor Dick Bernal.
It was there that Kenoly found his global platform. The “Lift Him Up” EraKenoly’s music exploded onto the global stage with the release of his 1992 album, Lift Him Up. Recorded live with a massive choir and a full band, the album captured a style of worship that was previously unseen in the church world—it was celebratory, technically excellent, and racially integrated. It bridged the gap between traditional black gospel and contemporary praise and worship.
He followed this massive success with God is Able (1994), which included perhaps his most signature song, “Ancient of Days.” The anthemic track, with its triumphant brass section and powerful call to worship, remains a staple in churches across denominational lines worldwide to this day.His 1995 album, Welcome Home, further solidified his status, winning a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album by a Choir or Chorus. Throughout the decade, Kenoly sold millions of records, becoming one of the flagship artists for the Integrity Music label.
A Legacy of UnityUnlike many of his contemporaries who focused primarily on solo performance, Kenoly was a leader of leaders. He was known for his ability to bring together diverse groups of musicians and singers, creating a sound that emphasized unity in the Body of Christ. His concerts were less about a show and more about a corporate worship experience that encouraged audiences to clap, dance, and shout.
He didn’t just sing songs; he led an atmosphere,” gospel music historian Dr. James Abbington noted. “Ron Kenoly made it okay for church to be joyful, loud, and excellent. He showed the world that praise was a weapon, not just a genre.”Later Years and FarewellKenoly stepped back from the spotlight in the mid-2000s, moving with his wife, Tavita, to Florida to focus on family and mentoring the next generation of worship leaders. He continued to travel and minister occasionally, but his legacy was firmly cemented in the millions of albums sold and the countless churches that adopted his music into their liturgy.
Tributes have begun pouring in from across the Christian world. Gospel icons like Donnie McClurkin, CeCe Winans, and Israel Houghton—all of whom cite Kenoly as an influence—have taken to social media to honor his memory.”Ron Kenoly taught us how to praise God without shame,” wrote Israel Houghton. “He paved the way for so many of us. Rest well, General.”Ron Kenoly is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Tavita, and their children. He leaves behind a musical catalog that includes classics like “Jesus Is Alive,” “Mighty Warrior,” and “Honor the Lord,” ensuring that his message of praise will continue to echo in sanctuaries around the world for generations to come.
