Iran denies attacking US embassy in Riyadh

Amidst the ongoing regional conflict, Iran has officially issued a categorical denial regarding the drone strikes that targeted the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh earlier this week

Speaking today from Riyadh, Iran’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Alireza Enayati, told reporters that Tehran had “no role” in the attack.

Official Stance: Enayati emphasized that while Iran takes responsibility for operations its command officially orders, it disavows this specific strike.

Counter-Narrative: Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei added that Iran’s military focus remains strictly on defending its own territory and striking “direct” U.S. military targets, rather than diplomatic missions or neighboring sovereign soil.

Despite the denial, reports from both U.S. and Saudi officials tell a different story of the events earlier this week:

  • The Strike: On the morning of Tuesday, March 3, two drones struck the U.S. Embassy compound in Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter.
  • The Damage: The Saudi Defense Ministry confirmed a “limited fire” and structural damage, including a partially collapsed roof.
  • The CIA Station: A high-profile report from The Washington Post alleged that the drones specifically hit a floor housing a CIA station, though no personnel were injured as the building was largely empty at the time.

Saudi Arabia’s Response

The Saudi government has reacted sharply to the breach of its airspace and the attack on a diplomatic mission on its soil:

  • “Flagrant Violation”: Riyadh slammed the attack as a violation of the Vienna Convention, which protects diplomatic premises.
  • Right to Respond: In a cabinet statement, the Kingdom noted that it has remained neutral and refused to let its territory be used to attack Iran; therefore, it considers these strikes “unjustified” and reserves the right to take “all necessary measures” to protect its security.
