INEC chairman Amupitan Warns AI Disinformation, Logistics Gaps Threaten Credible 2027 Elections

The current Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has indeed raised significant alarms regarding the 2027 General Elections.

Appointed in October 2025 to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Amupitan is navigating a landscape where digital warfare and physical logistics are the primary battlegrounds for electoral integrity

The “Sophisticated Triad” of Threats

During a recent lecture in March 2026, Professor Amupitan identified three converging forces that could undermine the 2027 polls:

  1. AI-Driven Disinformation: He warned that the weaponization of Artificial Intelligence—specifically deepfakes and synthetic media—is being used to manufacture viral controversies and assassinate the character of political figures.
  2. Logistics Gaps: Amupitan emphasized that “an election is only as good as its logistics.” He has called for a massive budget (approximately ₦873.7 billion) to bridge infrastructure deficits and ensure that materials reach all polling units timely.
  3. Security Volatility: He noted that when digital threats (like Foreign Information Manipulation) intersect with physical challenges (like insurgency), the “trust deficit” among voters widens.

Amupitan has described the 2027 elections as a “test of institutional resilience.” While he has expressed confidence that technology will minimize human error, he maintains that the biggest challenge remains the “ignorance of the voter,” which makes them susceptible to AI-generated lies.
