Jonathan Calls For Strong Judiciary, Respect For Rule Of Law
Former President Goodluck Jonathan made a strong case for institutional integrity, emphasizing that Nigeria’s future and stability rely heavily on an impartial judiciary, strong public institutions, and strict adherence to the rule of law.
Speaking as the chairman of the 2026 Law Week of the Yenagoa Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Bayelsa State, Jonathan addressed a crowd of judges, legal practitioners, and key stakeholders under the event theme: “Securing the Future: Sustainable National Asset Protection in Africa; Opportunities, Risks and Regulatory Pathways.”
The core takeaways from his address highlighted the essential pillars required to safeguard democratic governance:
- Institutions Over Individuals: Jonathan stressed that a nation’s progress is only guaranteed when public institutions function independently and effectively, completely free from the overbearing influence of powerful individuals.
- Custodians of Justice: Addressing members of both the Bench and the Bar, he reminded them that they are the frontline guardians of the country’s legal and regulatory systems, urging them to prioritize fairness and equality before the law.
- Equal Protection Under the Law: He pointed out that true democracy requires a legal framework that provides the exact same protection to both the highly vulnerable and the most powerful citizens.
“The future of our nation can only be secured when justice is stronger than power; when institutions are stronger than individuals…”
— Goodluck Jonathan
Broader Calls for Reform
Beyond the legal framework, Jonathan also used the platform to call for critical adjustments in other sectors crucial to long-term nation-building:
- Educational Overhaul: He advocated for comprehensive reforms to restructure Nigeria’s post-colonial education system, noting that it must be deliberately re-engineered to meet modern, global technological realities.
- Scientific and Strategic Growth: Sharing the stage with prominent Pan-Africanist Prof. Patrick Lumumba, Jonathan also noted that sustainable national development requires bold investments in science, technology, and strategic resource programs (like space and energy) so that African nations can engage on the global stage from a position of real strength.
