Ex-US Navy Sailor Sentenced To 200 Months For ‘Selling Secrets’ To China

A former US Navy sailor has been sentenced to 200 months (approximately 16.7 years) in federal prison for espionage-related activities involving the sale of military secrets to China.

The sailor, who served in the US Navy, was convicted of transmitting classified national defense information to representatives of the Chinese government. The sentencing follows an investigation by federal authorities that uncovered a scheme to exchange sensitive military information for financial compensation.

Nature of the Secrets

The classified information included:

  • Details about US Navy ship movements and operational patterns
  • Technical specifications of naval vessels
  • Information about naval exercises and tactics
  • Sensitive defense systems and capabilities

Investigation and Arrest

The case was investigated by the FBI and Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). Undercover operations revealed that the former sailor had established contact with individuals believed to be Chinese intelligence officers and had been receiving payments for the classified information.

Legal Proceedings

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence of:

  • Financial transactions between the sailor and Chinese contacts
  • Communications arranging the transfer of classified information
  • Testimony from federal agents involved in the investigation

The defense argued for a reduced sentence, but the federal judge imposed the 200-month term, citing the serious national security implications of the espionage activities.

This case is part of a pattern of Chinese espionage efforts targeting US military personnel and government employees. The Justice Department has increased efforts to counter such activities and has brought several similar cases in recent years.

The sentencing sends a strong message about the severe consequences for those who betray their oath and compromise national security for financial gain.
