Atiku’s Son Joins APC, Pledges Support For Tinubu 2027 Bid

Adamu Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President and PDP stalwart Atiku Abubakar, reportedly defects to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

The son in question is likely Adamu Atiku Abubakar, who has been politically active and worked on his father’s presidential campaigns. His move would be more significant than that of a less politically involved child.

Defecting (or “decamping” in Nigerian political parlance) from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Publicly endorsing President Bola Tinubu, his father’s long-time political rival, for a second term in the 2027 election. This is not just a party switch but a direct political statement against his father’s camp.

This would be a deep personal and political embarrassment for Atiku Abubakar. For his own son to defect to his arch-rival’s camp would be seen as the ultimate act of betrayal and a vote of no confidence in his leadership and the PDP’s future.

Such a high-profile defection would signal deep-seated disillusionment within the PDP’s ranks, even among those closest to its leadership. It could trigger a wave of other defections as party members question the PDP’s viability.

Atiku is widely expected to run for president again in 2027. His son’s move to support Tinubu would directly undermine that ambition from within his own family.

The APC would use this as a powerful propaganda tool, showcasing that even the opposition leader’s family sees the “future” with Tinubu and the APC. It validates their claim of being the dominant political force.

This move strategically weakens the main opposition party ahead of the 2027 election cycle. It’s a classic “divide and conquer” maneuver.

By securing a pledge for the 2027 election now, the Tinubu camp signals its intention to start consolidating power and building momentum early, making it harder for the opposition to coalesce.
