President Tinubu, First Lady Oluremi Receive Ceremonial Welcome At Windsor Castle On Historic UK Visit
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu have officially commenced their historic two-day State Visit to the United Kingdom, receiving a grand ceremonial welcome at Windsor Castle today
This landmark visit marks the first time a Nigerian leader has been accorded a full State Visit to the UK in 37 years, with the last being General Ibrahim Babangida’s visit in 1989. President Tinubu also holds the distinction of being the first Nigerian head of state to be hosted by the British monarch at the historic Windsor residence.
The day’s proceedings began with a warm greeting from the Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Catherine, who met the President and First Lady at their hotel before escorting them to the town center.
Key highlights of the ceremonial reception included:
- The Guard of Honour: In the warm spring sunshine, President Tinubu inspected a Guard of Honour in their traditional bearskin hats at the castle’s quadrangle.
- Artillery Salutes: A spectacular 42-gun salute was fired by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, signaling the official start of the visit.
- Carriage Procession: The President joined King Charles III in a traditional horse-drawn carriage procession through the streets of Windsor, which were lined with both the Nigerian Green-White-Green and the British Union Flag.
Beyond the ceremony, the visit is designed to transform a long-standing historical relationship into a modern economic partnership. Discussions between President Tinubu and King Charles III are expected to focus on:
- Trade and Investment: Strengthening the £8.1 billion ($11 billion) annual trade volume between the two nations.
- Infrastructure: Witnessing the signing of a £746 million financing deal for the refurbishment of the Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port.
- Cultural Exchange: Viewing a special exhibition from the Royal Collection featuring Nigerian artifacts, including a Yoruba beaded throne.
The itinerary continues tomorrow, Thursday, March 19, with President Tinubu scheduled to meet Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street for high-level bilateral talks. Meanwhile, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu is set to visit Lambeth Palace to meet with representatives of the Church of England.
This visit serves as a powerful symbol of “soft-power diplomacy,” signaling a renewed chapter of cooperation in trade, defense, and migration management between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
