Senate proposes jail term, 300k fine for hospitals that reject emergencies

🚨 NO MORE “NO MONEY, NO TREATMENT”! Senate Moves to Jail Hospital Workers & Charge ₦300k Fine for Rejecting Emergency Patients 🏥⚖️

Wazobia people, gather here! How many times have we heard sad stories of people losing their lives at hospital gates just because they didn’t have money upfront or a police report? 💔

Well, it looks like standard procedures are about to change big time!

The Nigerian Senate has just passed a major bill for second reading that aims to stop hospitals—both public and private—from turning away emergency patients.

Sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, this new bill proposes severe punishment for any medical facility or doctor/nurse that delays or rejects emergency care.

🔨 What the New Bill Says (Key Details):

  • 6 Months Jail Term or ₦300k Fine: Anyone (hospital management, doctors, or nurses) found guilty of rejecting or delaying an emergency patient faces up to 6 months in prison, a ₦300,000 fine, or both.
  • Strict Timelines for Doctors:
    • 15 Minutes: Assessment/triage must start within 15 minutes of arrival.
    • 30 Minutes: Basic stabilization (oxygen therapy, IV fluids, pain relief) must begin within 30 minutes.
    • 3 Hours: If a hospital cannot handle the case due to lack of beds or equipment, they must stabilize the patient and complete a formal referral to another facility within 3 hours.
  • No Police Report Excuses: Turning away victims of gunshots, accidents, or violence because of a missing police report remains strictly prohibited.
