Iran ready for nuclear-focused talks, rejects US military build-up

the diplomatic landscape between Tehran and Washington is a high-stakes mix of cautious dialogue and military posturing. Following indirect talks in Muscat, Oman, last Friday, Iran has signaled a willingness to negotiate—but on very specific, unyielding terms. Here is the breakdown of where things stand:

“Nuclear Only”Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has clarified that Tehran is ready for a diplomatic “step forward,” but only if the scope remains narrow.Nuclear Scope: Iran insists that talks focus exclusively on the nuclear file. They have explicitly rejected U.S. demands to include their ballistic missile program or regional “proxy” activities in the negotiations. The “Enrichment” Red Line: Araghchi stated on Sunday that Iran will never accept “zero enrichment.” Tehran views domestic uranium enrichment as a matter of national sovereignty and dignity, though they have hinted at potential “confidence-building measures” regarding the levels of that enrichment. The “Armada” Response: Iran has dismissed the recent U.S. military buildup—including the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group in the Arabian Sea—as an ineffective intimidation tactic. Araghchi noted that “military deployment in the region does not scare us.”

“Maximum Pressure 2.0″The Trump administration is maintaining a “carrot and stick” approach, using massive economic and military leverage to force concessions. Economic Squeeze: On February 6, President Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on any country doing business with Iran, aiming to isolate Tehran further.Military Credibility: The U.S. “armada” currently in the Gulf serves as a reminder of Operation Midnight Hammer (June 2025), which significantly damaged Iranian nuclear facilities. Negotiating Demands: While Trump recently noted that the Oman talks were “very good,” the U.S. expects “tangible and significant concessions” in the next round, scheduled for early this week.
