Suspects Accused Of IS-Inspired Bomb Plot Outside New York Mayor’s Home Face Terror Charges
The suspects, Emir Balat (18) and Ibrahim Kayumi (19), appeared in Manhattan federal court on Monday, where they were ordered held without bail.
The Incident and Allegations
The plot unfolded during a tense standoff between an anti-Islam protest led by far-right activist Jake Lang and a larger group of counter-protesters outside the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the city’s first Muslim mayor.
The Attack: According to the criminal complaint, Balat was captured on video lighting and throwing a homemade improvised explosive device (IED) toward the crowd. He then allegedly threw a second device handed to him by Kayumi.
The Devices: NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the devices contained TATP (triacetone triperoxide), a highly volatile explosive often called “Mother of Satan.” The bombs were packed with nuts, bolts, and screws intended to act as shrapnel. Fortunately, the devices failed to detonate.
ISIS Inspiration: Upon their arrest, both men reportedly admitted their actions were inspired by the Islamic State. Balat allegedly told investigators he wanted the attack to be “even bigger” than the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and signed a written pledge of allegiance to ISIS while in custody
Federal Charges
Both men face five major federal counts, including:
- Attempted provision of material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization (ISIS).
- Use of a weapon of mass destruction.
- Transportation of explosive materials.
- Interstate transportation and receipt of explosives.
- Unlawful possession of destructive devices.
Context and Reaction
Mayor Mamdani, who was not home at the time, condemned the “vile” nature of the original anti-Muslim protest while praising the “swift and decisive” action of the NYPD.
The FBI has since raided the suspects’ homes in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Law enforcement remains on high alert, noting that this incident occurred amid heightened tensions following recent military strikes in Iran.
